Case Study: Murray Riverside Village — Saving a Community with Smart Sewage Treatment

Updated: Jul 31

The Challenge

Murray Riverside Village, a caravan park occupied primarily by permanent and annual residents, faced a critical situation: its ageing sewage treatment system was due to be updated. An external report from a consultancy in Albury/Wodonga concluded that the park's land area was insufficient for a viable sewage treatment operation at the existing scale. The implications were severe—potential downsizing or closure.

Unwilling to accept this outcome, the owners sought alternative advice and through their Project Manager – Sustainable Park Solutions, they connected with Aubin Environmental and their installation partner Victreat Wastewater.

Background

Murray Riverside Village is a regional Australian caravan park catering mainly to permanent and annual occupants rather than tourists. The park is a tight-knit community reliant on sustainable, compliant infrastructure for its ongoing operation and quality of life.

The Aubin Approach

Aubin Environmental assessed what was required and assembled a specialist team, including a soil scientist who applied advanced scientific methodologies instead of relying on standard industry formulas. Through detailed analysis, the team demonstrated that the available land was sufficient for an effective solution.

Rather than replacing the existing infrastructure entirely, Aubin repurposed the old treatment plant as a primary treatment septic tank. This integration with a new HYDROS Smart Sewage Treatment System helped to minimise costs, maximise resource efficiency, and reduce site disturbance.

System Performance

Since installation, HYDROS has consistently delivered first-class water quality. Remote monitoring through ROBOLAB and WATCHDOG has enabled proactive maintenance and compliance assurance.

In the spirit of transparency, and as is often the case with highly customised and personalised solutions, early operational challenges were experienced but were quickly addressed:

  • Roto valve Issue: A jammed roto valve in the irrigation system was identified and replaced, restoring proper distribution.

  • Upstream Pump Wells: Existing pump wells outside Aubin's scope failed six months later. Aubin took the initiative to coordinate skilled tradespeople, replace outdated control panels, and resolve recurring blockages promptly.

As these components are not within the HYDROS system itself, Aubin didn’t know about them for a period of time, and so we are implementing a more rigorous regime of proactively making contact with clients so that we are not only relying on the HYDROS online watchdog systems, to provide a broader support role for wastewater on the entire site

Reflecting our philosophy of "no man gets left behind," Aubin's commitment often extends beyond the initial project scope. Our focus is always on removing obstacles, supporting our clients comprehensively, and ensuring systems continue to perform at their best, no matter the challenges.

Going Beyond the Scope: Strengthening the Entire System

While our contracted works ended with the HYDROS installation, we recognised that the performance of peripheral infrastructure, even when technically outside our responsibility, could impact overall client satisfaction and system reliability.

Rather than stepping back, we took proactive steps to strengthen the full site network:

  • Clarifying Responsibilities: We worked closely with the owners to better define the boundaries between Aubin's work and the existing infrastructure.

  • Enhancing Collaboration: We partnered with the owners to identify vulnerabilities across the broader system and proposed solutions to improve site-wide performance.

  • Building Regional Capacity: We expanded our network of specialist trades across regional Australia to offer faster, skilled support where and when it is needed.

This approach embodies the Aubin Environmental ethos: a commitment to long-term partnership, ensuring that clients are fully supported to achieve optimal outcomes well beyond initial handover.

The Outcome

Today, the HYDROS system at Murray Riverside Village is operating in excellent biological health, consistently meeting high water quality standards. Most importantly, Aubin Environmental's tailored intervention saved the village from downsizing or closure, securing the site's future viability.

Through expertise, custom system design, and unwavering customer support, Aubin Environmental delivered a robust, sustainable sewage treatment solution that continues to serve the Murray Riverside Village community.
